About the pro

A team you'd want on your side at 2 a.m.

Tucson Strength is an independent strength gym at 6130 E Speedway Blvd in Tucson. It began in 2010 as a small personal training operation and now runs a facility built around powerlifting, Olympic lifting and general strength work, with more than 12,000 square feet of training space, squat cages and competition combo racks, twelve platforms, Texas power bars and specialty bars, machines from Arsenal, Body Masters, Hammer Strength, Flex and Cybex, indoor and outdoor turf areas, a covered outdoor training facility, and conditioning equipment including Assault treadmills, ski ergs, Concept 2 rowers and a Jacobs Ladder. This listing covers the gym and coaching side of the business: open gym and weight room access, one on one personal training, small group programs, powerlifting coaching through the Tucson Barbell Club, and nutrition coaching. Group and personal training packages include gym access, so members do not need a second membership. It suits people who want coached, structured strength training rather than a big box gym, from complete beginners through to lifters preparing for USPA competitions. Group and personal training clients start with two one on one sessions so the coaches can check technique and adjust the program. Memberships are bought online at tucsonstrength.com. Anyone interested in personal training or group training is asked to book a free consultation first, and general gym enquiries and tours are handled during staffed hours. The gym can be reached on 520-445-6800.

FAQs

  • What are the gym's hours?

Members can train from 4:00 am to 11:00 pm seven days a week. The door is RFID controlled before 9:00 am and after 8:00 pm on weekdays, and outside 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at weekends. Staffed hours are 9:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday to Friday and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at weekends.

  • Where is Tucson Strength?

The gym is at 6130 E Speedway Blvd, Tucson, Arizona 85712. There is one location; the website says a second site is not currently open.

  • Do you sell day or week passes?

Yes. A drop in day pass is $20 and is valid for the calendar day of purchase rather than 24 hours. A one week pass is $50, two weeks is $60 and a one month pass is $110. Passes must be bought during staffed hours, and there are no free trial workouts, although the cost of a day pass is credited towards a membership if you join.

  • How much does a gym membership cost?

Month to month open gym access is $59 a month with an $89 enrolment fee, or $69 a month with no enrolment fee. Paid in full options are $245 for three months, $369 for six months and $699 for a year. A premium membership at $110 a month includes the recovery room and a bring a friend add on. An RFID card costs $12 on signup.

  • Is there an annual maintenance fee?

No. The pricing page states that Tucson Strength does not charge an annual gym maintenance fee.

  • What equipment is available?

More than 12,000 square feet of training space with squat cages, competition combo racks and benches, twelve platforms, machined plates, bumpers and competition kilo plates, Texas power bars and specialty bars, machines from Arsenal, Body Masters, Hammer Strength, Flex and Cybex, around 1,800 square feet of indoor turf and 2,000 square feet outside, a 2,500 square foot covered outdoor training area, and Assault treadmills, ski ergs, Concept 2 rowers and a Jacobs Ladder.

  • Do I need a membership to work with a personal trainer?

If you train with one of the in house staff trainers you do not need a membership. You do need one if you also want to train on your own on other days, or if you work with one of the subcontracted trainers at the gym.

  • How do I start personal training or group training?

Book a free consultation. A trainer meets you to discuss your goals, training background and any injuries so you can be matched with the right coach and program. Group and personal training clients complete two one on one sessions before joining classes.

  • What group programs do you run?

Kettlebell training, conditioning, group strength, bodyweight training, Original Strength, Concept 2 rowing and the Tucson Barbell Club for powerlifting. Each class is led by a coach who specialises in that style, and each participant follows their own program.

  • Do I have to compete to join the Tucson Barbell Club?

No. Competing is not a requirement, but the club expects consistent training on an approved program and a weekly training journal. Coaches assess your mobility and technique before you join, and there is a separate coaching fee for meet preparation and meet day if you do compete.

  • Can I bring a guest?

Yes. Members can bring a guest by buying a day pass, discounted to $8 a day for guests coming in with a member, or by adding a bring a guest option to their membership for $25 a month. If you want to bring a guest outside staffed hours, arrange it with management in advance and make sure a waiver is on file.

  • What is the cancellation policy?

Memberships run month to month or on longer commitments. Once the initial commitment is finished, a 30 day notice from your billing date is required. Cancellations must be submitted online through the customer service page and are not accepted by phone or at the gym.

  • Can I bring my own trainer to the gym?

No. Outside training is not allowed. All coaching at Tucson Strength must be with one of the gym's own staff or subcontracted trainers.
